Top 10 Massages to Experience in 2025

Our downtime is precious, and we should all make the most of it by truly unwinding from the daily grind. Whether it's a crowded commute, an exhausting work schedule, or the never-ending demands of parenthood, we all need to find ways to relax for our physical and mental well-being.

For me, the perfect remedy is the warming glow of a scented candle and a massage. It’s a tonic for the entire body, easing both physical and mental tension. A skilled masseuse’s hands have helped me through difficult life stages and enhanced the good ones—whether it was shaking off jet lag at the start of a holiday or quickly decompressing during a stressful workweek. There’s something about massage by candlelight that forces you to slow down and truly relax—whether it’s at a professional spa or simply a foot rub from a loved one at the end of a long day.

Below is a list of my top ten massage experiences from my travels over the past few years. It’s by no means exhaustive, and while I may not recall the names of every therapist, each experience left me feeling either deeply relaxed, re-energized, or in a state of complete zen.

Breeze Yoga, Beckenham, South East London

Our local yoga and Pilates studio offers more than just classes—they also have a selection of skilled massage therapists. I initially saw Paulo for deep tissue massages and was never disappointed. More recently, I’ve been seeing Marina, whose calming presence alone is enough to put me at ease. Her integrated approach introduced me to ‘Emotional Freedom Technique’ (EFT) tapping, which I was amazed to find incredibly effective during times of high stress. The setup at Breeze Yoga is serene and welcoming, with peaceful, beautifully decorated treatment rooms and a small retail area offering delightful wellness products.

The Spa at Hodson Bay Hotel, County Roscommon, Ireland

During a short holiday with my in-laws, I discovered this unexpected gem in the middle of Ireland. The hotel was filled with families during a chaotic half-term week, but thankfully, our booking was in the adults-only wing, which had a spa attached. My therapist used Ayurvedic techniques, introducing me to a whole new world of massage. The post-treatment solarium, with its quiet atmosphere and stunning views over Lough Ree, was the perfect place to doze off and prolong the relaxation.

KK Beach Club, Sri Lanka

This boutique hotel is already one of my favourites in Sri Lanka, and its massage therapist is a hidden treasure. During our first visit, a massage was included as a special extra through Mr & Mrs Smith—a welcome surprise. The combination of the tropical heat and an expert massage made for pure relaxation. While the treatment space wasn’t a dedicated spa, it was private and comfortable, and everything else at KK Club is so perfect that the lack of a spa didn’t matter.

The Ayurveda Centre at The Leela Kovalam, Kerala, India

A massage at the Ayurveda Centre at The Leela Kovalam was one of the most decadent treatments I’ve ever had. I opted for a four-hand full-body massage, a beautifully synchronized experience that left me feeling utterly rejuvenated. The treatment began with an intense seated leg and foot scrub, followed by the main massage, and concluded with a traditional steam session. Afterwards, tea was served, and if you were lucky, a chauffeured golf buggy would return you to your sea-view room, where the sound of crashing waves completed the blissful experience.

The Oberoi, Mumbai

The Oberoi is one of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed in, and the spa is no exception. On both my visits to Mumbai, I made sure to book their signature massage. It’s the perfect antidote to jet lag and the sensory overload of bustling Colaba. You can even select your own oils based on what you wish to gain from the treatment. As expected, the service was impeccable, and the massage ended with a refreshing traditional tea, leaving me fully restored.

Kandy House, Kandy, Sri Lanka

My first full Ayurvedic massage took place in a semi-open garden treatment room at the stunning Kandy House. The natural setting enhanced the experience, allowing the sounds of birds and rustling leaves to add to the serenity. Though my therapist and I couldn’t communicate in the same language, they intuitively found areas of tension and worked their magic, leaving me feeling ready to explore the breathtaking ancient city of Kandy.

Thai Wellness Massage, Brighton

This small Thai spa was a much-needed sanctuary during one of the most challenging periods of my life. While my mother was critically ill in Brighton and Worthing hospitals, I was exhausted, anxious, and emotionally drained. A family friend recommended this place, and for a couple of hours, I was able to temporarily escape the stress. The massage was a warm, healing salve that left me feeling stronger, reenergized, and better equipped to handle the difficulties ahead. The center itself isn’t luxurious, but it’s clean, private, and run by professionals who are truly exceptional at their craft.

Six Senses Samui, Thailand

A visit to the iconic Six Senses resort spa is a must, and at their Samui location, my husband and I indulged in our first-ever couples’ massage. Initially hesitant, we quickly relaxed into the experience. The treatment concluded with a fragrant rose petal bath set in a private tropical garden. As we sipped herbal tea, every muscle in our bodies relaxed, making it an unforgettable experience.

Danugur at Mala Aesthetics, Crystal Palace, South East London

I discovered Dan through ClassPass, and his deep tissue massages have been a game-changer for my well-being. He is incredibly skilled and professional, with a calm and reassuring presence that puts clients at ease. His space at Mala Aesthetics is modern and tranquil, making it easy to switch off from the outside world. I now use all my monthly ClassPass credits just to see him!

Hotel Bareiss, Baiersbronn, Germany

Last summer, I stayed at the beautiful Bareiss Hotel in the rolling hills of Germany’s Black Forest. Known for its traditional service and gourmet dining, the hotel’s spa facilities were just as impressive. I booked a deep tissue massage with Stefan, who had the perfect combination of skill and a relaxed demeanour. My only regret? Not booking more sessions during my stay!

Massages have consistently provided comfort and rejuvenation during my travels. Whether at a five-star resort or an independent wellness studio, these massage experiences underscore the significance of self-care and relaxation. I highly recommend including a massage in your travel itinerary if the opportunity arises, as it may become one of the most memorable aspects of your journey. Additionally, enhance your relaxation rituals at home with our spa-quality, destination-inspired scented candles. Travel relaxation, wellness, self-care, and spa experiences are essential for a balanced lifestyle.
